Sustaining Raleigh’s architectural inheritance for everyone’s benefit.

Thanks for a great Preservation Month
First established as a single week in 1973, Preservation Month was expanded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to encompass the entire month of May. This year, the celebration took on profound meaning as the country prepared for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, focusing heavily on the historic sites, neighborhoods, and landmarks that bring the promise of equality to life and tell the full American story.
Preservation Raleigh proudly championed this effort throughout May by highlighting some of our city’s most vulnerable historic assets through our annual educational awareness program, Places in Peril. Preserving these threatened spaces strengthens our local community, fosters a shared sense of place, and keeps us deeply connected to our history. Explore the featured 2026 “PIP” properties below to learn more about the local sites that need our advocacy today.

- Places in Peril: The Rufus J. Ivey HouseThe Rufus J. Ivey House, a historic 1872 brick residence in Wake County, faces demolition risks due to neglect and development pressures. Although listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it lacks protection as it isn’t a local landmark. Advocates urge for landmark designation to preserve and protect this historic home.
- Places in Peril: Former Hellenic Orthodox ChurchTucked away at 211 S. Person Street is a vital piece of downtown Raleigh’s cultural history. Built by a community of 25 families in 1938, the former Hellenic Orthodox Church represents the neighborhood scale, materials, and diverse heritage that defined the eastern edge of Moore Square. As the surrounding block transitions to high-density development, Preservation Raleigh revisits this unprotected landmark to ask how we can save it.
- The Wright-McMillan HousePlace in Peril: This beautiful home located at 216 Hawthorne Road in Forest Park is currently on the market for $3.2 million. While the price reflects the home’s size and prime location, it also places the property in a precarious position.
